CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) – Corpus Christi’s City Council formally recommended this week that three proposed affordable housing projects be cleared to receive state tax incentives.
Officials said it is likely that one of the three will get approval to be built.
One of the sites proposed would be called Avanti at Greenwood. It’s one of the three sites the City is proposing to the Texas Department of Housing and Urban Development for tax credits, which will allow one of those projects to proceed.
The other two proposed projects include the Casa de Manana Apartments on Old Brownsville Road, which would be rebuilt, and the Village at Greenwood, which would be a new construction.
All three projects are located in District 3, represented by City Councilmember Lucy Rubio.
"I’m super excited. The Council went ahead and approved all three projects because you never know when someone might slip on an application and then it might go to Victoria if we just choose one," Rubio said. "So I’m glad that we went ahead and approved all three."
Rudy Bentancourt, director of housing and community development for the City of Corpus Christi, said the State may make a choice by the end of summer.
"Based on the points system and conversations with the developers, it’s very likely that one of the two projects on Greenwood will get the tax credit," Bentancourt said.
Although both of those projects are more than 80 units each, one affordable housing advocate said it’s just a drop in the bucket.
"The waiting list is over 5,000 that the housing authority has," said Cathy Mehne, vice chair of the Housing Authority Board. "That’s a long waiting list. So 80 units, that’s not even a scratch."
Mehne said property taxes and insurance costs are making it harder every year for people to qualify for home loans, and the City needs housing to take care of those who work in local industry.
"Cheniere just signed that deal with China, so yeah, we need the workers, we need the education, and we need the homes to put those people in," Mehne said.
